Welcome to the LPC wildflower verge blog.
12 December 2025
We tried planting wildflower verges around the village several years ago which was a dismal failure. We took a step back and we have now decided to use the verge at the end of Manor Lane by Ashwell Road as a series of trial plots to try out different methods of establishing a wildflower verge.
Today we started that process by using a turf cutter to remove a layer of grass. Some of the removed grass was redeployed to a verge on Ashwell Road that had been severely damaged by a lorry driving across it.
Today we laid 2 plots with ready planted wildflowers - like laying turf. One section was planted as it came and the other had an assortment of wildflower bulbs spread across the soil before laying the ready planted mats on top.
Tomorrow we start bulb planting in one area and seeding another area on top of low fertility sterile soil. This should discourage grass from regrowing..
